  • Transparency International strongly concerned about safety of arrested Algerian activist
    Transparency International (TI) is greatly concerned for the safety of anti-corruption activist, Djilali Hadjadj, following his recent arrest, and calls on the Algerian government to ensure his safety and to adhere to the country’s code of criminal procedure. Hadjadj, president of the Algerian anti-corruption organisation, L’Association algérienne de lutte contre la corruption (AACC), was arrested on the evening of Sunday 05 September at the airport in the north-eastern city of Constantine. Formal charges have not yet been brought but the arrest appears to be linked to a case involving Hadjadj’s former employer, the Caisse Nationale d’Assurance Santé (CNAS).

    A report in the Colombian magazine Semana about illegal wire tapping by a Columbian government department was named the winner of the 2009 Latin American Award on Investigative Journalism, given annually by Transparency International (TI) and the Press and Society Institute (IPYS).

Cabinet decision on government vehicles will save the Treasury of the Palestinian Authority more than 30 million Shekels yearly The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity- AMAN received the decision of the Palestinian Council of Ministers to limit use of all government vehicles with great pleasure and enthusiasm. The decision entails that government vehicles are to be used for work purposes and during work hours only. The decision is applicable to all officials with the exception of the Ministers and Deputy Ministers. The number of vehicles granted to government officials at the various levels is estimated at 6200 vehicles.

OECD Progress Report states that Germany performs well in combating bribery of foreign public officials Today, Transparency International published its progress report on the prosecution of bribery of foreign public officials. As in 2009, Germany shows good results and is one of only seven out of 36 countries to actively prosecute bribery of foreign public officials. However, important reforms are still to be achieved. So far, there is no criminal liability of companies in Germany. Companies found guilty of corruption are charged under the so called “Ordnungswidrigkeitengesetz” (administrative offence law). If corruption were seen as a criminal offense, higher penalties could be imposed. Moreover, convicted companies should temporarily not be awarded public contracts. The necessary national central register has not been introduced so far. Last but not least the specialised prosecution offices in the German Federal Lands need to be strengthened.

    OECD progress report: The number of countries enforcing a ban on foreign bribery has shown continuous progress in the last six years, with countries representing more than half of world exports taking action, according to a new report by Transparency International (TI). However, in the past year twenty countries have taken little or no action.

    National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting information on all five MANS programme leaders. Vanja Ćalović, Dejan Milovac, Veselin Bajčeta, Vuk Maraš and Zorica Ćeranić, using article 18 of the Law on NSA, requested from NSA to provide information on whether that institution is collecting and keeping records of their personal data and if that is the case, to provide insight into this information.

Adequate procedures guidance for compliance with UK Bribery Act TI-UK's Guidance, which includes case studies, sample policies and a step-by-step implementation checklist, is intended to provide comprehensive guidance for companies seeking to comply with the Bribery Act and maintain good practice anti-corruption procedures. Companies following the Guidance will, in the view of Transparency International, have implemented ‘adequate procedures’ for compliance with the Bribery Act.

    Transparency International (TI) welcomes the mandatory disclosure of payments to governments required of oil, gas and mining companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, now mandated under landmark provisions in a US bill signed into law today.
